Transportation in Dili

Dili's transport scene is built around shared mikrolets, minivans painted in bright colors that run set loops through the city and out to the beaches. They're the cheapest way to move, costing a fraction of a taxi, and you'll know them by the young conductor leaning out the door shouting destinations. Taxis are plentiful but unmetered. Agree on the fare before you get in, or use the local ride-hailing app T-Lemo to lock in a price. For a splurge, hotel cars and a handful of tour operators offer air-conditioned SUVs, handy if you're heading into the hills for the day. First-timers should note that mikrolets stop running around dusk, so plan evening returns early. The city center is compact enough to walk. But midday heat can be brutal, carry water and shade up. Avoid the unofficial "guides" who swarm outside popular sites; they'll promise insider access but usually just steer you to an overpriced café. From Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport, the mikrolet stop is a five-minute walk past the car park. Look for the blue van marked "Becora" or "Comoro" depending on your hotel zone. If you land late or with heavy bags, the official taxi rank outside arrivals is the only game in town, negotiate the fare before your luggage goes in.
